Cam's latest controversy

Yesterday during a press conference following the Panthers Sunday win against the New England patriots, quarterback Cam Newton made a sexist remark in regards towards women in media and sports journalism and their knowledge of the game when he said, “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes.”

While that can be read and taken a number of ways, the video shows a nonchalant Newton, smirking and downplaying the question as if it was I don’t know, stupid or off subject. According to Jourdan Rodrigue, she had spoken with Newton following Wednesday’s presser and stated that it went much worse in a tweet that read “I spoke with him after and it was worse. I chose not to share, because I have an actual job to do today and one he will not keep me from.”

While there’s always two sides to a story, I can only go off of what has been made public which is the 30 second clip of the incident. Maybe they’ve had prior bad media run ins, maybe she wrote a bashing piece on him I don’t know, but what I do know, is that Cam was wrong in his statement and it is not a good look for the seventh-year quarterback who is the face of this franchise.

Sure I may be slightly biased in saying I know quite a few talented and well knowledgeable female sports journalists, but as a minority, I understand that in whatever job I go into career or not, I sign the same papers as my counterparts and coworkers and that without a question should equal fair treatment, something of which Rodrigue did not receive and not only puts her down, but the other representatives of females in media journalism as well.

It’s clear that Newton will be on the hot seat for a few days, but I think in order to save or clean up his image, he will have to go on and give Jourdan Rodrigue and maybe other women in media an apology. Not one of those scripted, my PR wrote this for me on a piece of paper and told me to read it word for word apologies, but something heartfelt and meaningful. Cam’s well-spoken, and I will hold him to nothing less of a meaningful thought out apology.
